One of the great musical traditions since the ‘birth’ of jazz is the improvisational “open jam session.” 2018 marks the 21st year of the Jacksonville Jazz Festival Jazz Jam Session, one of the most popular speciality sets of the festival, hosted by a quintet of high quality seasoned pros in the Kelly/Scott Quintet.
Jazz fans annually enjoy the exciting mix of musicians "sitting-in" to jam together, from aspiring students to festival heavyweights. Jam session participants of the past have included Horace Silver, Diana Krall, Russell Malone, Dave Valentine, Roy Hargrove, Rodney Whitaker, Brad Mehldau, Delfeayo Marsalis, the Poncho Sanchez Group, the Airmen of Note band members, Shelly Burg, Danny Gottlieb, Richard Drexler, the Piano Competition winners and contestants, regional pros, collegiate jazz students from UNF, JU, and FSCJ, jazz students from Douglas Anderson and LaVilla School of the Arts, musicians from around the southeast, and many others. It’s always exciting to see who turns out to play and sing!
Hosted by 2013 Jacksonville Jazz Fest Hall of Fame inductee, vocalist Lisa Kelly, and 2017 Hall of Fame inductee, trumpeter JB Scott, the jam session features their virtuoso rhythm section of Joshua Bowlus, Dennis Marks, and Jeremy Smith. With years of versatile small group to big band experiences and mentoring of each of these internationally travelled group members, including performances with Maynard Ferguson, Arturo Sandoval, the Dukes of Dixieland, the Jenson Sisters, Wynton Marsalis, Maceo Parker, Dave Brubeck, and many other jazz notables, the Kelly/Scott Quintet is ready to provide top-shelf musical support for the variety of musicians who turn out to participate in the jam session.
