2017 marks the landmark 20th year of the Jacksonville Jazz Festival "Jazz Jam Session!" Presented by Hot 99.5, the jam returns this year to the Hyatt Regency hotel and proves once again why it’s been one of the most popular specialty sets of the festival. Created by jazz vocalist Lisa Kelly in 1997, the session will feature the top-shelf host group, the Lisa Kelly/JB Scott Quintet, ready to support the variety of musicians who will turn out to play together in one of the great traditions of jazz, the improvisational “open jam session!”
Jazz lovers will enjoy the exciting mix of aspiring student jazz musicians getting the chance to "sit-in" and play with regional pros and Jazz Festival heavyweights. Notable jam session participants in the past have included Horace Silver, Diana Krall, Russell Malone, Dave Valentine, Roy Hargrove, Rodney Whitaker, Delfeayo Marsalis, Barry Greene, Todd DelGiudice, the Poncho Sanchez Group, The Airmen of Note band members, Piano Competition winners and contestants, and many others. One Never knows which jazz virtuosos will show up to play and sing!
Hosted by 2013 Jacksonville Jazz Fest Hall of Fame inductee, Lisa Kelly, this year’s jam session features a quintet that includes JB Scott, Scott Giddens, Dennis Marks, and Jeremy Smith. The quintet members all come from storied musical backgrounds and have played with such renowned musicians as Arturo Sandoval, Dukes of Dixieland, Ellis Marsalis, and many more. They bring a wealth of experience and skill that promises to make this year’s jam session one for the history books.
For those wishing to join in on the jam session, every piece of gear at the jam is provided, including an acoustic grand piano, electric bass and amp, drums, guitar amp, and full PA. Instrumentalists and vocalists, just bring your horn or voice, sign-up to perform a 'jazz standard' or a blues, and join in the fun! Audience members are encouraged to come early for a good seat and beverages and food will be available for purchase.
